Sustainable Development
A new approach to sustainability : BS8900 Managing Sustainable Development
How to implement the BS8900 series
The BS8900 Managing Sustainable Development series was initially conceived and drafted by David Jackman of The Ethical Space, as Chair of the BS8900 committee. This principle based approach has transferred the skills and methodologies developed under the corporate ethics umbrella (see previous page) into the area of sustainability and CSR (corporate social responsibility). The series covers events, supply chain, communities and other specific subjects
Therefore we are uniquely placed to advise organisations that wish to implement BS8900 series standards as the cornerstone of their sustainable development:
- strategy
- implementation / embedding
- and reporting
The flexible BS8900 approach, used by some major corporations internationally (often in combination with specific reporting arrangements),allows organisations to analyse for the first time or redefine:
- What constitutes a sustainable direction
- Key sustainable development principles and ethics
- Making sustainable decisions
- Embedding a culture of sustainability
- Mapping maturity
The series is also designed to work for SMEs and communites.
We develop this approach in detail. We can assist organisations or government bodies in understanding and applying these standards. These are very broad ranging and require an exceptionally wide skill set. An understanding of the philosophies behind both is key.
Understanding ISO 26000 - Social responsibility
This standard is due in October 2010. It is a very wide ranging introduction to CSR or social responsibility. It is connected directly to the BS8900 series and to corporate ethics. As one of the contributors to this substantive standard, it is an opportunity to be one of the initial users.
