Sustainable Communities
Communities are a basic unit of society and foster a ‘sense of belonging’. Yet communities are under pressure and can become disconnected. How can community resilience be enhanced and sustainable communities developed in the 21st Century? Communities need to work together to maintain their coherence and in some cases their survival.
This is a proactive approach to sustainable communities and uses examples and case studies of community development to demonstrate concrete progress and deepening maturity. The approach is based on the national standard, BS8900 series for Managing Sustainable Development
We focus on the role of shared values and principles in forging community engagement and practical action.
You can choose a one or two day workshop covering:
- Sustainable communities or simply survival
- Using the BS8900 series as a road map and toolkit
- Why is a sense of place relevant and useful
- Practical issues here and internationally
- The Grasmere Crucible – a case study
- Practical issues in building engagement in sustainable development
- Community Interest Companies
- Local networks – sharing experiences
The 2 day course is available in Grasmere, in the Lake District, a place of unrivalled social history and the hearth of many influential movements where community is very much a focus for local developments. The fees for the second day workshop will be shared with the Grasmere Crucible CIC.
