Governance

Good governance underpins both ethical and sustainable business. But how can governance become ‘good’?

Our approach is designed for senior people in organisations of all kinds to reflect, ideally in a conducive atmosphere, on the issues they face in the light of growing interest in corportae ethics and global sustainability. We encourage and facilitate a broad discussion of their role in setting corporate values, developing culture and delivering ethics in practise.

These practical concerns of disseminating and embedding ethical culture are examined in detail along with possible mechanisms and approaches to find long term solutions.

We consider perspectives on ethical leadership and how this can operate in diverse and disparate organisations. The development of ethical 'wisdom' is a key focus, including an evaluation of ways of assessing ethical outcomes.

The sessions include the development of relevant maturity matrices that provide a pathway for further progress. Governance indices of various types are considered. The role of controls and processes are evaluated - leading to a re-consideration of methods of stakeholder engagement and measures for building trust and confidence.

The attributes and contribution of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) is covered, together with an opportunity to share and learn from good practise.

Programmes can be arranged for single organisations at any location or at suitable venues selected in the Lake District.

Governance

Sessions will be facilitated by David Jackman, a senior regulator for 12 years, part of the senior management team of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). He has pioneered the role of good business principles and ethics in regulation. As FSA’s Head of Ethics he set out the approach to principle based regulation, treating customers fairly and the underpinnings of the retail distribution review.

He also contributed to the Higg’s Review of Non-Executive Directors (now the Combined Code), the Global Reporting Initiative, The Institute of Business Ethics, the ISO Committee on Social Responsibility (ISO 26000) and The Walker Review of governance.

David also has practical experience in banking, professional institutes, teaching, as CEO of a government agency and in consulting with a wide cross-section of businesses. He continues to write and teach on governance issues.
